The rambler style home draws its history from the traditional ranch home popular from the 1950s to the 1970s. Although the rambler maintains a single story, general open concept ideas, and garage, it deviates from the traditional ranch style in that the roof lines are raised using higher pitch roof trusses and taller walls. This lends the ability, depending on the design, to have high ceilings, vaulted or tray ceilings, or other ceiling architecture not available in the traditional ranch style home. Rambler style homes often include basements.
Two story homes provide two levels above grade with roughly the same ceiling heights. By definition they include a permanent staircase. Second story windows for completed rooms generally indicate the home is two story. Many two story homes incorporate open areas that span the entire height of the structure, such as family rooms, and often incorporate windows that are extremely tall or multiple windows spanning the height. Such designs can create dramatic effects by utilizing mezzanines, bridges, or the more standard balconies and railings.
